What it must include

For a business that is not VAT-registered: a unique invoice number, your name and contact details, the customer's name and address, a clear description, the supply date and invoice date, and the amounts charged and the total owed. A sole trader also adds any business name and an address for legal documents.

Payment terms

Put the due date on the invoice, not just the terms. A date is harder to misread than 14 days. Add how to pay, so the client does not have to ask.

VAT is different

If you are VAT-registered, a VAT invoice includes more information. This page covers invoices without VAT.

Keep the number for every month

SideTill is the simple record of your side hustle: log the job, send the invoice, record the money when it comes in, and see whether the month actually made you money. It also shows your best month, so you can tell a bad month from a bad habit.

Questions

Do I need an invoice number?

Yes, a unique one. A simple count is fine, and never reuse a number.

Can I send it as text?

Yes. Any clear invoice works. SideTill builds a clean PDF if you want one.

What if I do not have a business name?

Use your own name. A business name is only needed if you trade under one.
